My Story

So, who am I, and how do I know so much about special education and learning disabilities? I’m Fern Goldstein, 2009 LDA National Special Educator of the Year, an award that I earned teaching English to elementary, middle, and high school students with learning disabilities while developing and self-publishing some textbooks and such for students with LD: Looking Glass Spelling and Oops: Grammar in Context, as well as a homework program called G. Whiz! I

I have spoken nationally and in the northeast at conferences for ASAH, CEC, IDA, and LDA. When I moved to Delaware, I thought I’d start consulting in the schools here, but the pandemic shut the schools down, so I wrote my new novel, The Student. I also served as longtime Vice President of LDA of New Jersey and now am President of LDA of Delaware and on the National Board of LDA of America.

In a previous life (BC, before children), I taught ESL in France while putting my husband through medical school. Upon my return to the States, I worked in a daycare, as a substitute
teacher, and as an editor and proofreader for several advertising agencies till I got my master’s degree. I’m the parent of two gifted sons, one of whom has learning  disabilities, and have two amazing granddaughters.
